What Is A Dumpster Swap (Dumpster Switch Out)?

What is a Dumpster Switch Out (or Swap)?

What Does It Mean To Switch Out a Dumpster?

dumpster swap out - switch outA Dumpster switch out is when you receive the same sized roll off or different size to the location you originally rented the dumpster.  A new container is brought to you, while the full one is picked up (same size or diffe
rent sized container than you rented in the first place).  If you have more debris than the roll off dumpster will hold during the first initial rental cycle and need an additional  trash bin brought to you, this is considered a ‘switch out’.  Every Roll Off business begins a new billing cycle (as if you’ve initially rented a new dumpster) - even if you haven’t used the full rental allotment (term in days included in the rental cycle).
For instance, you rent a 10 cubic yard dumpster and you really have 20 yards of C&D (construction and demolition debris), roof shingles, household items, or vegetive waste you are  disposing of, and your project requires a second empty dumpster to be brought to the property  or job site you’re working at; the billing cycle starts over based on the price of the new sized roll off the dumpster company switches your first can out with.  If you rented roll off # 10/4, and you paid $200 for for a 14 day rental (a 10 yard dumpster for a fourteen day term), it is filled it to the yellow fill-line.  A week later, you realize the container is full, yet you still have more materials in your household you need to dispose of (even though you didn’t use the full two weeks of the rental term to fill the dumpster), you need that roll off dumped at the land fill and an additional container brought to you.  This scenario is considered a ‘switch out’.  Dumpster Switch Outs are charged as if you’re renting an additional roll off.

In order to do a switch out, the hauler must drop an empty dumpster near the property.  At times this is done in the street and is a multi-step process. The switch out procedure is as follows:  1.  The new empty container on the roll off truck’s back is dropped off temporarily in the road, or nearby the job site vicinity 2. The full one located at the property is picked up 3.The full roll off is dropped next to the empty dumpster the empty container 4.  The empty dumpster is placed back on the roll off truck and dropped off at the residence 5. Finally, the full one in the street is picked up and hauled away.  If your neighborhood, job site, or area in general will not warrant a switch out (due to lack of space, a highly trafficked area, etc.  where our drivers cannot maneuver a switch out, a dump return may be necessary).

If you’re wondering why dumpster companies can’t just include this in the original rental cycle price, Express Roll Off Dumpsters of Brevard County, Florida will explain why.  Express Roll Off Dumpsters includes free drop off and pick up in every dumpster rental.  The number of days included in the rental cycle have less of an impact on our prices than the time and travel of hauling the dumpsters.

For instance, when Express delivers an empty dumpster to you (the empty bin is either coming from our commercial location or from the local land fill).  If one of our drivers is en route at the Sarno landfill, and your delivery is in Palm Bay, Fl 32907 the travel time is roughly 25 minutes (or 18 miles).  The overhead costs for the initial drop off delivery includes:  fuel (which is the most expensive, since it’s diesel), insurances (auto - roll off truck, property, and liability), our driver’s time (hourly wages, workman’s compensation, etc.),our equipment wear and tear (this includes repairs and maintenance), licensing (local, federal, and state), advertising, as well as other additional types of overhead.  Once the dumpster is delivered and filled up, we haul the contents away to the local landfill (usually the closest one to your physical location, unless it contains pressure treated wood - this has to be disposed of at the Cocoa Landfill).  Therefore, the overhead involving the actual roll off transport service (hauling portion) is the primary cost when renting a dumpster from Express Roll Off, or most other dumpster companies.  Obviously if you require the dumpster for a longer duration than our 10 or 14 day service agreements (keep your container for a far longer amount of time than contracted), we must charge you for the excess term you used the roll off.  However, this is usually not as costly to us as the travel portion of the services offered by Express Roll Off.

If you’re a construction foreman working on a larger scale project and have 100 cubic yards of waste to dispose of or more, a dumpster switch out cannot be avoided.  The C&D (construction and demolition) debris disposed of while completing a large scale contracting project is expected, and the expenses for multiple disposals have previously been factored in when the the project was bid on by the construction company doing the job.

However, if you’re a property owner desiring to save money on roll off rental, renting the smallest size dumpster is often times not the most economical way to go.  Why?  Reference the example below that we have demonstrated for you.

Example 1:

You choose to rent a 10 cubic yard dumpster for $200 for 2 weeks- cost $200
You fill up the 10 yd roll off and need an additional empty dumpster-cost  $200
Total Spend  $400

Example 2:

You choose to rent a 15 cubic yard dumpster for $225 for 14 days - cost   $225
All of your disposed content fit, you call for a free pick up - cost  $                   0
Total Spend    $225

The above examples demonstrate that avoiding a switch out or dump return will end up costing you significantly less money in the long run. By simply opting for a slightly bigger dumpster than you anticipated could potentially result in a savings of nearly $200 (precisely $175).  Cheaper upfront prices, aren’t always the least expensive option when it comes to renting dumpsters.  There are probably many other things you would rather spend $175. on than debris disposal.

Express Roll Off Dumpsters of Palm Bay Florida offers four convenient sizes of roll off containers available for rent: 10 yard dumpster , 15 yard roll off, 20 yard container, and 30 yard roll off dumpsters.  It is imperative to accurately estimate your disposal needs in advance and order the correct sized roll off to accommodate the particular project in order to save the most money on debris removal.

Dense materials such as:  Roof shingles, fines (base aggregate material for hardscapes/pavers), dirt, fill, dry concrete, stone, etc. may require a dump return or switch out, since we only use 15 yard dumpsters to be used (and filled 3/4 of the way full) when hauling heavy materials like these.  Heavy loads like these place a great deal of stress on our equipment (especially our hydraulics), so we must enforce this policy.
